Public realm improvements 2026/27

The Project

We are working on a package of improvements at Poole Bus Station during 2026/27. This follows an allocation of Government funding for BCP Council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan and is being delivered in partnership with Morebus.

Great progress has been made so far at the Seldown car park end of the site, with the public realm immediately outside the building having been transformed from an underused area of tarmac into a greener, more welcoming space for everyone.

Over the summer we will be replacing the Seldown car park boundary fencing, and adding floor art to provide an opportunity for play and wayfinding.

Enhancements so far include:

  1. A garden space which provides a place to meet and rest with a variety of seating, playful stepping stones, and a Noughts & Crosses game, rain gardens to manage surface water, and new trees for future summer shade.
  2. A new shelter with a green roof.
  3. A new mural by Paintshop Creative Studio inspired by Poole’s unique character, attractions and history.
  4. Improved access – adjusted drop kerb/approach for easier movement along the cycle route.
  5. Provision of cycle facilities with secure pods, Beryl bikes, and inclusive bike parking.
  6. A new path linking the bus station with the car park and coach station for safer, more direct access.
  7. Wildlife-friendly planting – drought-tolerant grasses and perennials now soften the approach. The plants support pollinators and are complemented by lines of Purbeck stone blocks to add structure and reflect local character.
  8. Boundary improvements – new fencing and lower planting increase visibility and safety.

Drought-tolerant planting around Purbeck stone blocks soften the approach & support pollinators

Further works in the Bus Station itself will include redecoration and improved flooring, lighting, signage and seating – enhancements that build on an earlier investment in electronic information displays with CCTV at each stand which have proved popular with passengers. Transport Safety Officers are also employed to regularly patrol the area.
